Alicia Augello Cook Keys est née le 25 janvier 1980[1] à New York d'une mère irlando-italienne, Terri Augello et d'un père jamaïco-portoricain, Craig Cook. Son père et sa mère se sont séparés lorsqu'elle avait trois ans. Depuis toute petite sa mère l'accompagne dans sa carrière musicale. Au niveau famille Alicia a un demi-frère, prénommé Cole. Elle commence le piano à l'âge de cinq ans. À l'adolescence, elle entre à la Manhattan's Professional Performance Arts School, où elle acquiert une technique vocale impressionnante. C'est à l'âge de 14 ans qu'elle rencontre son manager, Jeff Robinson grâce au frère de celui-ci, Joseph Conrad Robinson (c'est le professeur de chant d'Alicia). À 16 ans, elle intègre l'Université Columbia qu'elle quittera pour se consacrer à sa carrière de chanteuse. Elle chante alors sur la scène locale, enregistre des morceaux pour des bandes originales de films tels que Men in Black et Shaft.

En 1999, Alicia Keys saisit une opportunité en signant un contrat avec Arista. Mais rien de bon en marcha avec cette maison de disque, car ils voulaient d'Alicia leur idéal de jeunes chanteuses r'nb, et Alicia refusa catégoriquement. C'est à ce moment-là, qu'Alicia créé sa société de production avec son partenaire musical, Kerry Krucial Brother, KrucialKeys Enterprise.

C'est peu après (Alicia a 18 ans) que Clive Davis, producteur au sein de Arista, quitte Arista pour créé son propre label, J Records, et emmène Alicia avec lui.

En juillet 2001, son premier album Songs In A Minor sort. Il a rencontré un véritable succès en France et aux États-Unis, en effet il arrivera numéro 1 aux charts dès sa sortie, et le restera pendant six semaines. Les critiques professionnels qualifient cet album de chef-d'œuvre, et pour preuve certaines de ces chansons sont qualifiées de classique de la soul, comme " Fallin" (son premier single). Pour cet album Alicia reçoit cinq Grammmy Awards (la plus haute récompense musicale aux USA), ainsi que d'autres récompenses comme plusieurs Soul Train Awards, 2 Billboard Awards,... Au final il s'en vendra plus de douze millions d'exemplaires à travers le monde.

En 2003, la chanteuse est de retour avec un nouvel opus The Diary of Alicia Keys. L'originalité de cet album est un succulent mélange de Rnb/soul et Hip hop. Cet album reçoit les mêmes critiques que pour Songs in a minor, c'est un chef-d'œuvre. Il reçoit lui aussi de nombreuses récompenses, y compris quatre Grammy Awards. Au final il s'en est vendu plus de 8 millions d'exemplaires.

En 2004, Alicia sort aussi un livre de poèmes intitulé " Tears for Water ", qui devient un best seller en quelques semaines.

Le 11 octobre 2005 un CD et un DVD Live MTV Unplugged sont sortis simultanément. Il se classe lui aussi numéro un des ventes dès sa sortie.

Mais Alicia est aussi une femme de cœur, car dès 2002 elle commence à soutenir l'action de l'association " Keep A Child Alive " qui fournit des médicaments contre le sida aux enfants du tiers monde. Pendant l'année 2006, Alicia voyage à travers l'Afrique pour cette association, et parraine la construction d'une clinique en Ouganda. Pour récolter des fonds pour l'association, Alicia écrit avec Bono une chanson " Don't Give Up " dont les fonds reviennent à l'association. Elle crée aussi sa propre association " Frum Tha Ground Up " pour aider les jeunes talents à réaliser leurs rêves.

En 2007, Alicia touche aussi à un art qu'elle n'avait pas encore marqué de son emprunte, le cinéma. En effet en janvier 2007, on la voit pour la première fois dans un film d'action de Joe Carnahan, Smokin'Aces. Les critiques qualifient d'Alicia, de " très bonne surprise dans ce film. Le 3 octobre 2007 on la verra cette fois-ci dans une comédie " The Nanny Diaries " où elle campe le rôle de Lynette, la meilleure amie du personnage principal (joué par Scarlett Johanson). Et vers 2008 elle commencera le tournage de " Composition in Black and White " qui est l'adaptation cinématographique de la biographie d'une pianiste classique et métisse des années 30/40, Phillipa Schuiler dont Alicia tiendra le rôle. Pour l'anecdote on peut noter la présence de Halle Berry à la production.

En conclusion Alicia est une touche à tout (musique, livre, cinéma, production..., mais la musique reste son moteur essentiel, d'ailleurs pour l'anecdote son prochain opus studio, est annoncé pour cette année.

Le 7 Juillet 2007, elle participe au concert international Live Earth pour la cause de l'environement. Elle y interprète 4 titres dont un inédit : "That's The Things About Love". Un titre qui sera présent sur son 3ème album studio qui sortira le 13 Novembre 2007, qui porte le nom de "As I Am".

This bright and accomplished performer was born January 25, 1981, in Manhattan, New York. Alicia began her career at the age of four with a role in the "Wizard of Oz". She is a true musical prodigy whose multi-dimensional gifts emerged at a very early age. Her wit and intelligence are almost too hard to perceive. Alicia recognizes a number of influences, including her ultra supportive mother, who told her, "You can quit anything else but you can never give up on your piano lessons". Alicia also sites a teacher at the Professional Performance Arts School in Manhattan, who, while she was majoring in Choir, gave her valuable instruction on her voice.

Alicia will take modern R&B soul to a whole new level of entertainment and ambition. Highly sought after by record labels, Alicia's celebrity talent has caused old-fashioned bidding wars in her honor. Completing high school at 16, she entered Columbia University, and continued her studies in music, writing and performing. In 1999, Alicia went to work with Cleve Davis at J Records and cut 'Songs in A Minor'. This release sent Alicia to the top of the charts and her star status was confirmed. Alicia's soulful sound can be attributed to a variety of natural talents. She is a skilled songwriter, boasts years of expertise as a classically trained pianist, and possesses a powerful set of vocal cords. By combining these talents, she is destined to become a superstar.

To say that Keys is a female D'Angelo would do this star a disservice, as she's an original. Alicia confidently states, "I was born in Hell's Kitchen and spent a lot of time in Harlem and was exposed to a lot of different types of music, from Biggie to Nirvana to Miles Davis to Nina Simone and back to classical. I think it was inevitable that I would merge all of them in what I do now. Aretha Franklin and James Brown had real things to talk about and feel in their hearts and that's the kind of music that flows through me." Clearly, at such a young age, a long and ground breaking career looms ahead of her. This is the real deal, a bona fide superstar. This bi-racial beauty has been blessed from above in more ways than one, Alicia is a good looking, talented, sexy woman.
